Data Collection

Version 1.1

Introduction

Effective data collection is crucial for accurate labor analysis results. This guide covers best practices for video recording, data preparation, and configuration of analysis parameters within ALAS.

Video Recording Guidelines

Equipment Requirements

For optimal analysis results, we recommend:

  • Camera: HD camera with minimum 720p resolution
  • Frame Rate: 8-12fps for maximum motion capture
  • Storage: Sufficient storage for continuous recording
  • Lighting: Even lighting without strong shadows or glare
  • Mounting: Stable mounting position with clear view of the work area

Recording Setup

  1. Camera Positioning

    • Mount the camera to provide an unobstructed view of the entire work area
    • Position at top view or 45-60 degree angle for optimal viewing of hands and materials
    • Ensure all activity zones are within the frame
    • Avoid reflective surfaces in the field of view
  2. Video Settings

    • Set resolution to 1080p or higher for clarity
    • Use a frame rate of 8-12fps for faster processing without loss of data
    • Enable stabilization if available
    • Set white balance appropriate for the environment
    • Use neutral color profile for best AI detection

Recording Duration

  • Record complete cycles of operations for comprehensive analysis
  • Include at least 3-5 repetitions of each activity for statistical validity
  • For longer operations, consider segmenting recordings by logical breakpoints

Preparing Videos for Upload

File Requirements

ALAS accepts the following video formats:

  • MP4 (H.264 codec)
  • AVI
  • MOV

Maximum file size: 4GB per video

Pre-Processing Recommendations

Before uploading:

  1. Trim unnecessary footage from beginning and end
  2. Ensure video plays correctly on your local device
  3. Check that all activities are clearly visible

Video Organization

Use a consistent naming convention for your videos:

  • Format: [Date][Module][Operator]_[Order#]
  • Example: 2025-04-03_AssemblyA_Smith_12345

Uploading to ALAS

Upload Process

  1. Navigate to the Videos section in ALAS
  2. Click the Upload Video button
  3. Select your video file or drag and drop into the upload area
  4. Wait for the upload to complete (progress bar will indicate status)

Configuring Analysis Parameters

General Information

Essential metadata for each video:

  • Operator: The individual performing the tasks
  • Module: The specific assembly or workstation
  • Order: The work order or job number
  • Date and Time: When the recording was made
  • Subsections: Number of belt segments or work areas

Defining Activities

For each analysis, you'll need to define:

  1. Activity Types: Categories of work being performed
  2. Activity Names: Specific tasks within each category

Setting Up Regions of Interest (ROIs)

ROIs define the specific areas where activities occur:

  1. In the video preview, use the drawing tools to create regions
  2. Label each region according to the activity it represents
  3. Adjust the boundaries to accurately capture the work area
  4. Set detection sensitivity for each region
  5. Define overlapping regions for activities that share space

Best Practices for Data Collection

Environmental Considerations

  • Lighting: Ensure consistent, diffuse lighting throughout the recording
  • Background: Minimize visual clutter and movement not related to the task
  • External Workers: Avoid including non-operators in the frame

Operational Recommendations

  • Inform operators they are being recorded, but encourage normal work pace
  • Record during typical production conditions, not staged demonstrations
  • Capture full shifts or complete work cycles when possible
  • Document any unusual conditions or variations during recording

Data Integrity

  • Maintain original videos as backups
  • Document any modifications made to videos before upload
  • Create detailed metadata records for each recording session
  • Regularly audit your data collection process for consistency

Troubleshooting Collection Issues

Common Problems

  • Poor Video Quality: Ensure adequate lighting and proper camera settings
  • File Size Issues: Split longer recordings or adjust resolution
  • Upload Failures: Check network connection and file compatibility
